LUMINOUS
MYSTERIES.
We all know that Jesus said: “I am
the Way, I am the Door, I am the Light.”
Pope John Paul II wanted us to stop on the last statement; ‘I am the
Light’, that is why we now pray the
Luminous Mysteries.
Meditating on those five Mysteries
we find a great shedding of light by Jesus Himself.
The first Mystery: ‘The Baptism
in the Jordan’.
The message of Jesus was this: ‘Look
I want to save you (humanity), to pull you out of the darkness of sin and
corruption, after the Fall caused by the Original Sin. I am taking upon myself
all your sins, corruption, misgivings, so that you can make it out of the
‘darknesss of sin’ and can walk back to the LIGHT.’ You can refer to Isaiah
where he said that Jesus took upon himself all our iniquities….so back to the
Light.
The second Mystery:
‘Jesus manifests His first signs at the marriage feast at Cana.’
Yes, St.John calls the miracles
performed by Jesus as ‘signs’, that is a sign of His Divinity. When we realise
that Jesus is God in the form of a human being, we acclaim His Divinity and our
eyes open … and we see everything clear as if in broad daylight…. so back to
the Light.
The third Mystery: ‘Jesus
proclaims His Mission and encourages repentance’.
If man repents and by the grace of
God accepts Jesus’ Mission of Salvation, he would be walking in the Light…. so
back to the Light.
The fourth Mystery: ‘The Transfiguration’
Some Biblical scholars, are of the
opinion that Jesus was not transfigured, per se, BUT, Peter, James and John,
were granted the privilege on Tabor, to see how Jesus actually was, rather
looked, in His Divinity. That is how Jesus always WAS. Not one of all the
people, crowd that surrounded him daily, nor His disciples, not even His
apostles had ever seen Him like he looked on Tabor. We shall see Christ like
that, we hope, in His glory when we come face to face with Him in Heaven… a
feast of Light…. so back to the Light.
The fifth Mystery: ‘The
Institution of the Eucharist’.
If we want to find the Way,
we need Light, and then we shall even find the Door. Jesus remained with
us in the Blessed Eucharist to be our Way, our Light, our Door, and our food….
so back to the Light.
It is interesting to note that
thirty years before Pope John II introduced these Luminous Mysteries,
universally, these same luminous Mysteries were in the mind of St.George Preca
… the Maltese saint (I have been posting Spiritual Guidelines from the Writings
of this Saint). These same Mysteries were mentioned in St.George’s Writings,
long before the Pope had the idea of introducing them to the Universal Church.
Hope I have answered your question.
God bless us.
