The Sacrifice of the Holy Eucharist 16

Sacred Vestments used by the Celebrant during Mass.

The AMICE, an oblong embroidered strip of fine linen falling on the shoulders of the priest, it is a symbol of the  cloth which covered Jesus’ face , He was spat on and punched, then asked: “Tell us, prophet, who kicked you.” But for the priest this is a symbol of God’s power to watch over him in his vocation of the priesthood. In certain countries it is no longer worn.

The ALB is the clerical vestment worn by priests, a long white linen robe, bound with a girdle. The name ‘Alb’ is derived from the Latin word ‘alba’ meaning ‘white’.

The GIRDLE thought to represent the rope / chain which bound Christ to the column for flagellation. For the priest it represents the girdle of chastity by which a priest is bound for life.

The STOLE is a long, narrow ornamental band with fringed ends worn by priests. It is the sign proper of the priesthood. It is a sign, a symbol for him who wears it, that he is endowed with all the powers of the Holy Priesthood.

The CHAUSUBLE is a rich vestment or garment worn uppermost by a priest at the Celebration of the Eucharist. The word is derived from the French chasuble.

COLOURS of vestments used, WHITE is a symbol of chastity and holiness, used during the Christmas period, and the Eastertide, feasts of the Virgin Mary and of Saints who were not martyred.

GREEN is a symbol of Hope, the hope of the People of God in the Promise of  eternal Salvation, if they remain faithful to their Baptismal vows and strong in Faith.

RED is a symbol of Love, used on Palm Sunday, on Good Friday, in Pentecost and for the commemoration of Martyred Saints.

VIOLET / PURPLE is a symbol of Penance and Sorrow. It is used during Advent, during Lent, Liturgy of the Departed and in the Penitential Celebrations.

CONSECRATED CHALICE / CUP a symbol of Christ’s Tomb, the Cup of bitterness drank by Jesus to the last drop,  and the Passion of Jesus.

PALLA a piece of square cardboard covered in fine, white linen used to cover the Chalice. It is symbol of
the stone that was rolled over the Tomb of Jesus.

CORPORAL  a linencloth on which the consecrated elements are placed during Mass.

PATEN is the round metallic plate on which the Bread is placed during the Sacrifice of the Eucharist.

PURIFICATOR is a small handkerchief with which the Celebrant wipes clean the Chalice after use. It is a symbol of the Shroud which covered the Blessed Body of Jesus.

HOST, used by the Celebrant, on it is embossed  either the figure of the Lamb, a Cross or the letters IHS (JHS) which is a monogram of the name of Jesus. The IHS became a symbol, quite like the chi-rho in the Costantine period. Sometimes on the H appears a Cross and underneath three nails. Some,  wrongly interpret IHS as meaning “Jesus Hominem Salvatur”., Jesus savior of Man.
